Furloughs anticipated at Hostess
Posted On: May 11, 2012
Published: May 11, 2012 3:00 a.m. Briefs Staff, news services Hostess Brands Inc. has notified state officials of potential layoffs as it works to reorganize through Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. At stake are 856 Hoosier jobs. The maker of bread and snack cakes alerted the Indiana Department of Workforce Development of its pending actions. The Irving, Texas-based company said it employs 17 at its 1912 Bluffton Road outlet store location. The business gave an outlet closings and layoff date of July 1. Even so, spokesman Erik Halvorson said it continues to try to negotiate a deal with lenders and is fielding offers from potential buyers. “Last Friday, we mailed conditional (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notices to all 18,500 Hostess Brands employees around the country,” Halvorson said Thursday. “The notices were sent to alert employees that a sale or wind down of the company is possible in the future. However, our goal is still to emerge from bankruptcy as a growing company and there are no immediate actions being taken to sell or wind down the company.” Hostess filed for bankruptcy in January. At that time, the Teamsters union accused the company of trying to “bully” its way out of obligations.
